This photo was taken by Dr. Hiroyuki Hirano (now Professor of The University of Tokyo) at the time of the first AMBO (Asian Molecular Biology Organization) Symposium held in Kyoto (December, 1981). The photo was used in the Japanese translation of Matt Ridley's great book "Francis Crick: Discoverer of the Genetic Code" (Keiso Shobo Publishing Co., Ltd., translated by Koji Tamura) with the preface written by Kindra Crick (a granddaughter of Francis Crick). She kindly provided the photo without knowing who took it, but after the publication of the book, Dr. Hirano, a reader, turned out to be the person who took the photo. What a marvelous story!
